Shortness of breathing | dyspnea a painful session

Table of Contents

Shortness of breathing is also known as the deficiency of breath and has many reasons that occur in the respiratory tract like Asthma, Emphysema, Pneumonia, Bronchitis, inhalation, injury pulmonary embolism, anxiety, and lung disease. In the shortness of breathing, patients have difficulty breathing that can be caused by the circulatory and respiratory conditions and also other conditions such as anemia and high fever.

Your Heart and lungs usually responsible for transporting oxygen to tissues and remove carbon dioxide hence problem with either of these can affect your breathing. Dyspnea may be acute(sudden dyspnea) or chronic (long-lasting dyspnea). Sudden dyspnea happen with other symptoms like cough, fever but chronic dyspnea make you feel out of breath.

Causes of shortness of breathing:

Many conditions cause shortness of breath. The shortness of breathing may be chronic if the symptom is more than a month. Mostly shortness of breathing conditions is related to your heart, lungs, or mental health.

   Lung Conditions:-

   Several lung conditions are followed:

Asthma:-It is a condition in which the inner walls of the trachea in the lungs can burn, swell, and produce extra secretion. The result is an asthma attack and makes the patient harder to breathe.

Asthma’s symptoms can be controlled. Symptoms of this disease vary from person to person because asthma changed over time.

  •     Breathing shortness
  •     Pain in chest
  •     Trouble sleeping
  •     Coughing

Pulmonary embolism:-It is the blockage of one of the pulmonary arteries in your lungs and also occurs by forming a blood clot in your lungs. Because the clot blocks the blood flow to the lungs.

Symptoms of this disease depends upon the size of bulk and the general symptom is shortness of breath. Other symptoms are:

  •     Anxiety
  •     Plashy skin
  •     Chest pain
  •     Irregular heartbeat
  •     Restlessness
  •     Weak pulse

Incurable bronchitis: It is a category of respiratory disease that is constituted by breathing problems and poor airflow from the lungs. People with this disease are at its peak condition that possesses cardiac disease, respiratory disorder, and other conditions. It is treatable. Out of breath and poor bronchitis are two major conditions caused by this disease.

Incurable bronchitis is the exaggeration of the bronchial walls which are responsible for carrying air from the alveoli of the lungs, whereas out of breath is a condition that develops when alveoli are damaged from its one end due to smoking or other gases that is harmful.

Other signs of this disease are:

  •     Breathing shortness
  •     Wheezing
  •     Chest tightness
  •     Chronic cough that produces mucus
  •     Blueness of the lips
  •     Swelling in legs

Pneumonia: It is a condition in which alveoli in one or both lungs are large and it may fill with juicy fluid or pus. It develops because of a virus, bacteria, or fungi and causes serious coughing, chills, fever, and difficulty breathing. Patients with pneumonia typically present with productive cough, fever, and abnormal breathing. More severe cases will have hypoxia and tachypnea. Its symptoms vary from mild to serious. Its seriousness depends upon the germs that attacked and cause infection and also your age.

  •     Pain in chest when breathe or cough
  •     Cough which produces phlegm
  •     Fever
  •     Fatigue
  •     Shortness of breath
  • Loss of appetite

Prevention from lung disease

There are many factors that we have discussed above that can have an effect on our lungs and we should prevent these factors. Some factors are very harmful that put your lungs at risk such as smoking, sleep disorder, air pollution, and cleaning solutions. Some factors can’t be controlled but some are controlled by yourself with some effort because you must keep yourself avoid these threats. Some tips are given below:

  • Cigarette smoking damages your lungs and put you in several serious diseases like lung cancer COPD because toxins and carcinogen enter into your very harmful lungs. So if you are a smoker then quit it as soon as possible.
  • Wash your hands with soap several times a day to avoid germs and by other common infections that are spread by hands and also prevent your throat by wearing masks and prevent your mouth with masks when you sneeze because people around you are protected.
  • Get vaccinated against influenza every year.
  • Either you are young or older make your routine to get up early in the morning and do exercise regularly for about 30 to 40 minutes per day.
  • Sometimes outside air is unhealthy to breathe that affects your health so minimize it by different useful strategies. Because polluted air can cause lung diseases such as asthma.
  • Always wear masks when you work with chemicals in a closed area.
  • Regular checkups prevent you from disease even you are feeling well this will good for your lung disease.

Heart Conditions

The conditions that affect the ability to pump blood to your body may lead to shortness of breath. Types of heart disease are as follows:

  • Cardiac arrest
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Round heart disease
  • Naturalcardiacfaults
  • Hardening of the arteries
  • Cardiac germs

Cardiac arrest: It appears when your muscles do nog drive out the blood at a suitable or sustainable level this is known as heart failure. Heart failure is increasing commonly as people age and usually a result of hypertension and valvular disease. This condition develops for many reasons include a poor diet, smoking, obesity, and diabetes. One method to prevent cardiac disease is to control the conditions that can cause this condition. Signs of heart failure are:

  •     Breathing shortness
  •     Fatigue and weakness
  •     Swelling in feet, ankles, and legs
  •     Increased the rate of urine at night
  •     Abdomen swelling
  •     Richness in obesity
  •     Rapid heartbeat
  •     Deficiency in starvation and nausea

Cardiac arrhythmia:

It refers to abnormal heart rhythms means that a person’s heart counts faster, too slow, and not in a regular pattern. If the beats of the heart are faster than the normal it is called tachycardia and if the heart counts are slower than the normal it is known as bradycardia. Arrhythmia causes when there is any interruption to electrical impulses that contract the heart than it results in arrhythmia. Its symptoms are as follows:

  •     Chest pain
  •     Dizziness
  •     Fluttering heart
  •     Slow pulse
  •     Fainting spells

Round heart disease: It is the type of heart disease that causes the heart muscles to grow larger, rigid, thick, and weak and makes your heart harder to pump blood to your body and it will lead to heart failure. The main type of cardiomyopathy is hypertrophic and restrictive cardiomyopathy. In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a portion of the heart becomes thickened and makes the heart difficult to pump blood.

Symptoms of this condition include:

  •     Bloating
  •     Fatigue
  •     Leg swelling
  •     Shortness of breath

Natural cardiac faults: It is the general type of birth fault. It occurs when a fetus is growing. It is related to problems in the design of the heart. It glitches the walls, valves, and arteries and also veins near the heart. Its symptoms are as follows:

  •     Fatigue and low energy
  •     Irregular heart rhythm
  •     Shortness of breath
  •     Blue-tinged skin

Hardening of the arteries: It refers to a narrowing of the coronary arteries and it is one of the major conditions that lead to a heart attack. A plaque builds in the arteries that move the oxygen-rich blood through the heart. A person with this disease experiences shortness of breathing as well as chest pain and tightness, sweating, and fatigue.

Signs of CAD are:

  •     Discomfort and pain in the chest
  •     Nausea
  •     Shortage of breathing
  •     Indigestion
  •     Dizziness

Cardiac germs:

It is an infection of the endocardium and endocardium is the inside wall of the cardiac chamber and heart valves. Endocarditis is the infection that occurs when bacteria or some other germs enter your bloodstream then reach your heart and attached with to heart valves and damaged the heart tissue. This infection may develop slowly or suddenly because it depends on germs which causes this infection. Its symptoms vary from person to person.

Symptoms of Endocarditis:

  •     Fatigue
  •     Fever and chills
  •     Pain in joints and muscles
  •     Shortness of breath
  •     Pain in chest
  •     Swelling in feet, legs, or in the abdomen

Prevention from cardiac disease

Cardiac disease is a very common or dominant cause all over the world. Some harmful things can increase the cause of cardiac disease. So you should control such dangerous elements. Some elements you can’t manage but many are that you can easily be controlled to reduced the chances of getting heart disease. Some of them are as follows:

  •     Control high pressure of blood because hypertension is the main exposure fact for cardiac disease hence you are aware to check your blood flow regularly. There are some approaches to control high blood pressure without using medicines. Do exercise regularly because exercise helps you to keep your blood pressure down to a safer level. Eat a healthy diet that is rich in grains and eats fruits and vegetables because it can lower your blood pressure up to 11 mm hg if blood pressure is high. Also, reduce sodium in your diet.
  •     Stay a normal weight, because overweight can increase exposure to cardiac disease. By controlling your overweight can control the risk factor for heart disease.
  •     Utmost alcohols, because drinking so much alcohol can increase the factor for heart disease by raising the pressure of blood. It can add calories that can make you obese.
  •     Smoking can raise your blood pressure and lead to a higher risk of a heart attack. Because the nicotine in cigarettes causes blood vessels to constrict and makes the heart harder to circulate the blood to your body. So you should quit smoking to prevention from heart attack.
  •     Stress is also linked to heart disease in many ways hence manage stress by doing exercise, quit smoking, and focusing on something peaceful by lowering your risk for heart attack.
  •     Keep your sleep properly if you don’t have proper sleep then it may increase your blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. These three things can lead to heart disease. So you need to have good sleep.
  • Take an aspirin every day this reduces the danger of heart attack.
  • Be social, stay connected with your family and friends, and make new friends this makes you feel happy, fresh, and might be good for your heart health.
  • Physical activity may help you to control your weight and also other conditions that are dangerous elements for cardiac disease such as hypertension, cholesterol, and insulin-dependent diabetes.
  • Embrace a healthier lifestyle and make sure to avoid foods that have high saturated fat and salt.
  • If you have a recent heart disease diagnosis then talk to your doctor. Then your doctor provides tips to prevent heart disease that may include quitting smoking, controlling blood pressure and exercise regularly, maintaining a healthy cholesterol level, losing weight, and eating healthy food.
  • A medication may be necessary for the prevention of heart disease

Other related Conditions that cause shortness of breath

  1.                       Allergies
  2.                       Sleep apnea
  3.                       Anxiety and panic attack

Asthma is closely related to allergies. Pollen, mold, pet hair, certain food, insect stings ate the allergens that cause wheezing and other allergens cause symptoms in your nose, throat, ears, and lining of the stomach and can also irritate the lungs and make you hard to take a normal breath.

When the body diagnoses an allergy it rejected it by developing the antibodies and histamine to control the affect allergen. Due to histamine airways become inflamed and produce mucus, as a result, it becomes narrower hence when a person breathes in and out it produces a whistling sound due to narrow airways. This is the distinctive wheezing sound. Wheezing can be treated by specific treatments include:

  •     Pollen is treated by antihistamines and steroids nasal spray or tablets.
  •     When pets take off their hair they cause allergies due to their saliva and urine hence reducing the allergens is a useful method to cure pet hair allergies.

Allergic asthma is one of the most general types of asthma. Many people have asthma is due to allergens and it is a long-term condition. People who have allergic asthma have symptoms include cough, breathing shortness, fast breathing, and chest strictness.

People with a more serious and severe allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock its signs are difficult breathing, rapid breathing, bluish skin, and swallowing of the face and skin.

Sleeping disorder is a condition in which people experience shallow breaths during sleeping it results in poor sleep. Millions of people suffer from this condition. There are two major causes of sleeping disorder one is a curious sleeping disorder and the second one is a middle sleeping disorder.

Curious sleeping disorder: It is the condition of sleeping disorder the trachea chunks during sleep because of muscle relaxation of the tongue and throat more than they should relax during sleep it arrests the airflow to the lungs.

Another factor of blocking the airways is the tonsils that are larger than the opening of the trachea it becomes the inside of the windpipe narrow. Arrest airways will decrease the level of oxygen in the blood hence signal send to the brain which aroused you from sleep.

Middle sleeping disorder: It is likewise to curious sleeping disorder but it is less common. In this type of situation, muscles don’t allow you to breathe because the brain doesn’t fully support or give signs to muscles. This condition may occur due to some other medical problems such as obesity and heart failure.  Some people have both disorders so-called mixed sleep apnea.

Signs of sleeping disorder: Commonest symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea is high snort during sleep. Other signs  include:

  •     Pain in the head region
  •     Dryness of mouth and sore throat when you wake
  •     Wake up at night and frequently go to the bathroom to urinate
  •     Sudden shortness of breath at night

These conditions occur during sleep hence the person is not aware that he has sleep apnea and this problem is spotted by his family member. It is diagnosed by sleep tests. One type of test for sleep apnea is a polysomnogram test, in this individual stay overnight in a sleep laboratory and sensor are attached to its body to control its brain, eye movement, blood pressure, and heart rate.

Anxiety and panic attack: Panic attack are the most prominent symptom of panic disorder and anxiety refers to natural fear response and shortness of breath is one of those, you may feel like that you don’t have enough air to breathe like you are hungry for air even you may feel that you may pass out or potentially die, which only heightens your panic and anxiety.

With anxiety you may not be running for your life, you experience shortness of breath because your body trying yo get more oxygen to your muscles for preparing you to run. Anxiety  symptoms include:

  •     Faster breathing
  •     Chest tightness
  •     Feeling suffocation
  •     Muscle tension
  •     Feeling dizzy or unsteady
  •     Feeling restlessness
