Coccidioidomycosis | Fungus disease infect lungs

Coccidioidomycosis is known as lung infection. Coccidioides posadasii is a fungus that caused coccidioidomycosis. This infection is commonly found in the southwestern United States. Lungs affected primarily by this infection.

The lung is an internal sac shaped respiratory organ. It is used for inhaling and exhale In the process of inhaling intake of air takes place while in exhale process air expelled from the lungs. Coccidioidomycosis primarily affects the lungs.

History of coccidioidomycosis

In 1892 it was first discovered by a medical student. And he got knowledge about infections mostly from the observation of clinicians and scientists in California.

Symptoms of Coccidioidomycosis

There are following symptoms of coccidioidomycosis

Cough and fever are common symptoms of coccidioidomycosis. Fatigue, a breath of shortness, legs rash, pain joint, and sweats night are the symptoms of coccidioidomycosis.when cut or wound occur in the skin then fungal spore can enter in the skin then it cause the skin infection.

How symptoms appear soon

When fungal spores enter the skin through a cut or wound than after 1 and 3 weeks symptoms appear due to the person’s breath in the fungal spore.

If the infection becomes severe then the symptoms will last longer. Few weeks to few months the symptoms of coccidioidomycosis last usually.

If valley fever becomes severe then it causes some serious problems in our lungs. In some cases this infection spreads from the lungs to other parts of the body. Such as skin, bone, and the central nervous system of the body.

It is the type of disease which occurs when the infection spreads from the lungs to other parts of the body such as the brain, spinal cord, and heart.

  • Pain occurs in the knee and joints.
  • Painful lesion in the skull.
  • Ulcer, skin lesions are more serious than a rash.

Risk factor

There are the following  risk factors.

Environmental exposure

The chance of valley fever is when we inhale spores. The people who work in construction, roads, agricultural fields, and the military and the area where most dust particles are present.

Pregnancy

During the third trimester and pregnant women are vulnerable to more serious coccidioidomycosis. And after new born baby mothers are vulnerable.

Weak immune system

Some people have weak immune systems. The risk of infection increases in patients that have weakened immune systems.

Age

Over adult age the chance of valley fever increase. Then it affects overall health.

Their following techniques are used to know about valley fever.

When we want to know about the valley fever healthcare provider rely on our medical history, symptoms, physical examination, and laboratory test.

A blood sample is taken and send it to the laboratory to look at coccidioides antibodies. This is a common method that is mostly used. Health providers usually this method.

To know about the valley fever pneumonia the healthcare providers seek our chest x-ray or CT scan of our lungs.

A sample of tissue is taken from the body and examined under a microscope.

To diagnose the valley fever we use blood tests and skin tests. In the process of the skin test, we seek that immune response develops to the coccidioides fungus that causes valley fever. There are two types of skin test results. One is a positive test result and the other is the negative test result.

Positive skin test result

Positive test results mean we have an immune response to the current coccidioides infection. In positive test results, some people are sick with valley fever which causes other symptoms or illnesses of flu. But some people have no symptoms of this infection. In positive test results we are immune to coccidioides and in future we will not have valley fever.

A negative skin test

In negative skin, we do not face coccidioides and do not have valley fever. Some people even have a coccidioides infection and they do not react to the skin test. This process is known as False-negative result. False-negative results occur more commonly in people.

Have a coccidioides infection that is severe.

Have some illness that is related or interferes with skin test results.

Some people are taking medicine that interferes with the skin test result.

To know more information about valley fever, talk with a healthcare provider.

Types of valley fever

There are two types of valley fever.

Acute

It is the mild form of the infection. When inhaling the fungal spore unnoticed then after one to three weeks the symptoms of the acute infection begin. Without treatment, this disease usually goes away. This infection occasionally spread in the body, causing infection in the skin, bone, heart, and central nervous system. Treatment is required for these infections.

Chronic valley fever

A chronic coccidioidomycosis  is a form of illness that is long term. After contracting acute form develop from a month or year. Lungs abscesses can form,in one form of the illness. Some time abscesses rupture, they release pus into the space between the lungs and ribs. Than As a result scarring occurs.

Mostly people do not develop the chronic form of pulmonary coccidioidomycosis that are infected with this fungus.

Cause of coccidioidomycosis

Fungus coccidioides that cause the valley fever disease, it lives in the soil of the relatively arid region. When a person inhales dust contaminated with coccidioides then people are infected and then the fungus is not transmitted from one person to another person.

Treatment

Amphotericin B is selected for the treatment. Amphotericin B is often used for those patients that have rapidly progressive coccidioides infection and respiratory failure. Fluconazole itraconazole, ketoconazole is commonly used for the treatment of valley fever. In a few months, some symptoms of valley fever go away without any treatment.

This process is commonly found in some people. Some people have always needed antifungal treatment that has a severe lung infection or at the time when it is spread from one part of the body to another part. Some people have a necessary need for antifungal medication to avoid developing more risk of severe valley fever.

Prevention

During dust storms we should close our window and door and stay inside. We should avoid all those activities that closely contact dust particles, digging, and gardening. Skin injuries clean well with soap and water if the wound was exposed to dust. This process reduces the developing chance of skin infection.
